In the 19th century, when the British empire occupied the sea port cities of Shanghai and Ningbo in Greater China, the British brought traditional made to measure and handmade tailoring skills with them. At that time, many wealthy and upper class British moved to Shanghai and Ningbo, taking with them the demand for bespoke tailoring skills. A lot of Chinese tailors learned and grasped these skills and bequeathed them to later generations. These have become known as 'Hongbang' tailors in those two cities. Even now, the tailors use traditional inches as their measurement scale to make garments. Most ordinary Chinese do not know this system. The Hongbang Tailors is also famous for initiating "Five Firsts" in the development of modern Chinese garments: the first Western suit store, the first homemade Western suit, the first Chinese tunic suit, the first theoretical concepts for a Western suit and the first Western suit design school.

The Bespoke Tailoring Museum is located in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. 'Hongbang Tailoring' is an important part of the culture and heritage in Ningbo and China.
